Safe Alternatives for Liquid Drain Cleaners from a Holly Springs Septic Company

Now that you understand how liquid drain cleaners can harm your septic tank and even destroy your pipes, let’s discuss some safe alternatives you can use to fix occasional clogs. Note that these methods are intended to serve as quick, temporary fixes. If your clogs are constantly recurring, make sure to contact a plumber or septic tank inspection company to ensure your system is functioning properly.

Baking soda and vinegar

This trusty non-toxic combo can clean almost anything, including clogs. Simply add one cup of baking soda to the clogged toilet or slow drain, then wait a few minutes. Follow with two cups of vinegar. Listen for bubbling and sizzling noises to indicate that the mixture is working. Wait another couple of minutes, flush the toilet or run water down the drain, and if necessary, repeat.

Hot water and dish soap

Heat up about a gallon of water on the stove. While it’s heating up, squirt some dish soap into the sink or toilet. Then, take the very hot, but not boiling, water and carefully pour it in. Wait several minutes, and then try flushing the toilet or turning on the sink. You should find that the soap and water have softened the clog, allowing it to pass. If not, try repeating the process again.

Enzyme-based cleaners

If you must use a liquid drain cleaner, look for one that is labeled “bio” or “enzyme-based.” These are cleaners which use bacteria cultures and concentrated enzymes to naturally eat away at organic matter. When they enter your pipes, these organisms feed on everything from hair and waste to mold and algae.

After consuming whatever’s blocking your pipes, they organisms reproduce, spreading “good” bacteria throughout your plumbing and septic system. While enzyme-based cleaners often need to sit overnight in order to work, they’re much safer on your septic system than conventional drain cleaners.
